The Bed You Made

This one’s got a bit of a twisty backstory, so buckle up. I wrote this song not long after Diggin’ a Hole, during a time when I was working through some pretty heavy emotions. And then—out of nowhere—THE EX reached out. Yeah, that ex.

She wanted to talk.

I’ll be honest, it threw me for a loop. It had been three years, and I thought I was past all the emotions tied to her—turns out, not so much. Mostly, I realized I was holding on to a lot of anger and resentment. She said she wanted to apologize, to make things right. So, we started emailing back and forth, digging up a lot of old stuff I thought was buried.

For me, writing songs has always been a way to process emotions, so naturally, I started scribbling lyrics. I had this idea for a chorus: “This is the bed you made—now lie in it!” It felt raw, real, and perfectly captured where I was in that moment. But then life did what it does best—it surprised me.

Somehow, through all the back-and-forth, THE EX and I actually worked through a lot of our issues. We ended up becoming friends again, which, I’ll admit, wasn’t what I expected. But here’s the kicker: that left me with half of a pretty angry song and none of the anger to finish it.

I loved the concept of the chorus, but the fire behind it just wasn’t there anymore. I was stuck… until—thankfully—you can always count on the Canadian government to stir the pot. Another scandal popped up, and suddenly, the frustration came flooding back. It practically wrote itself from there.

So, while this song might’ve started as a post-breakup vent session, it evolved into something bigger. It’s a reminder that emotions are messy and unpredictable, but they’re also where the best art comes from. And hey, if the personal drama doesn’t do the trick, there’s always politics, right?
