A few years back, I wrote this song. It was a big deal for me because it was one of the first songs I’d written (and actually finished!) in years. Honestly, I pushed myself to get it done—not for anyone else, but to prove to myself that I could still write. It had been so long, and up until then, I’d mostly written with others. I guess I just needed to show myself that I could create something on my own.
The music came first, and I sat with it for a long time before diving into the lyrics. Lyrics were something I’d typically left to my writing partners in the past, so tackling them solo felt like uncharted territory. To get into the headspace, I listened to that music everywhere—especially in my car. I’d play it on repeat, driving around, letting ideas take shape.
Eventually, this concept started forming in my head. It was about the ‘voices’ we all hear—the good ones, the bad ones, the ones that help us, and the ones that try to pull us under. I like to call them my demons. And let’s be honest, we all have them in some form or another, right?

Over the years, I’ve learned how to deal with those voices. For me, it’s about listening to them but not letting them take over—assessing them logically instead of blindly following or ignoring them. But as I sat with the music, I started asking myself: What if I hadn’t learned to conquer them? That’s where the song really took root.
It became this back-and-forth battle between the voices in my head—the good ones vs. the bad ones. When do you trust them? When do you ignore them? And how do you know which one is which?
I’ll be real with you: I’ve had my battles with depression over the years. I think a lot of highly creative people do. But I’ve found that the best way to quiet those demons, for me, is to write. Writing lets me process what I’m feeling and what I’m going through. Since I’ve allowed myself to reconnect with songwriting, it’s been like therapy—just me, my guitar, and whatever’s rattling around in my head.
So, that’s the story behind the song. It’s about the fight we all face sometimes—the voices we wrestle with, and the strength it takes to find our balance. Writing it helped me find mine, and I hope that when people hear it, they feel a little less alone in their own battles.
