I wrote this song during a time when I felt utterly alone. You know those moments when the world feels too big, and you wonder if anyone out there sees things the way you do? That’s where I was. Writing this song became my way of reassuring myself that I wasn’t the only one. That there are others out there who think, feel, and fight just as strongly as I do.
At its heart, Ride or Die is about standing up—especially against tyranny. It’s about those who speak out, even when it costs them everything. That fight has been a recurring theme in my music because it’s a big part of who I am. I’ve lost a lot over the years by standing firm in my beliefs, but I’ve gained something priceless too: the knowledge that I never betrayed myself.
For me, this song is also personal commentary. I’ve written often about my frustrations with the Canadian government—how they’ve treated people who disagree with them and the overreaches I’ve seen. Honestly, I can’t even remember the exact scandal or failure that lit the spark for Ride or Die. What I do remember is sitting down to write a song I needed to hear—a reminder to myself that I wasn’t alone in this fight.
