I grew up listening to Ronnie James Dio. Still do. His voice and that whole era of heavy music shaped a lot of what I love about rock and metal.
So I wanted to do my own version of “Rainbow in the Dark” as a tribute.
The original is from 1983, off Holy Diver — Dio’s first album with his solo band after leaving Black Sabbath. It came out as a single that year and it’s basically become one of the Dio songs people point to right away. That riff, that hook, that whole vibe — it’s burned into music history for a reason.
When I was younger, I’ll be honest: some of the lyrics felt kind of cheesy to me. Not “bad,” just… dramatic in that 80s way. But the song didn’t change — I did.
That’s the real reason I wanted to record this.
When you’re young, you judge songs like a critic. You nitpick. You roll your eyes at lines that feel too direct. But when you’ve lived more life, you don’t listen that way. You listen like a human being.
Now, what I hear in “Rainbow in the Dark” isn’t theatrics. It’s someone taking loneliness seriously… without letting it win. It’s not “poor me.” It’s “this is where I’m at, and I’m still standing.”
And yeah — if you’ve ever had one of those seasons where you felt disconnected, uncertain, or stuck inside your own head… you already know why this song still matters.
One more thing: I’m not trying to sing like Dio. I can’t, and I’m not going to pretend I can. So my version is stripped down, acoustic, and honest. No big production. No trying to “out-Dio” Dio. Just the song, played my way, with respect.
If you listen/watch it, I’d love to know: should I do a full studio version too, or keep it raw and acoustic? Drop a comment and tell me.
